What are tobacco leaves & their origins?

These are the prized part of what botanists call the nicotiana tabacum plant. What you may not know is that tobacco leaves are enormous when they are picked. They can reach up to a metre in length, not to mention 50cm wide.

For example, in the early 1500s, it arrived in Europe courtesy of the Spanish conquistadores and Japan, thanks to Portuguese sailors. It made its way to Australia in the early 1700s in the hands of visiting Indonesian fishermen. Along the way, it made it to both China and India, which remain big producers of tobacco even now.
